How Kraków Divides Itself
Old Town (Stare Miasto) — The Cultural Core
Rynek Główny, the Main Market Square, is one of the largest medieval squares in Europe and the natural anchor of any day. The Czartoryski Museum, Collegium Maius, Cloth Hall, and St Mary’s Basilica are all within a ten-minute walk. The hotel — Amber Design Residence — sits inside this zone. You leave on foot every morning and return on foot every evening.
Wawel — The Royal Hill
A short walk south along ul. Grodzka brings you to Wawel Hill — the limestone outcrop where the Royal Castle and Cathedral have stood since the 10th century. Kazimierz — The Jewish Quarter
East of the Old Town, across a few streets that gradually narrow, Kazimierz is the former Jewish district — now the city’s most magnetic neighbourhood. Plac Nowy with its Okrąglak building, Singer Café with its sewing-machine tables, small galleries on ul. Józefa, and hidden courtyards behind every second door. The place where Kraków’s soul lives.
Podgórze — Across the River
The southern bank, connected to Kazimierz by Father Bernatek’s Bridge. The Krakus Mound is here — a legendary earth hill with a 360° panorama over the city, free forever, and almost always quiet. Ghetto Heroes Square, with its empty iron chairs memorial, is a five-minute walk away.
The Vistula Riverbanks
Between Wawel and Kazimierz, the Vistula promenade is where Kraków spends its summer evenings — bar boats moored along the bank, street food, the castle reflected in the water. The most effortless hour of any day here.

W6 4453 lands at Kraków-Balice Airport at 12:25. The SKA1 train departs from the platform upstairs — a ticket machine takes card, 19 PLN, 17 minutes to Kraków Główny main station. From there, the hotel in the Old Town is ten minutes on foot. Check in, drop bags, short rest — then the city.
Friday afternoon belongs to the first proper impressions: lunch at Morskie Oko on ul. Szczepaňska — żurek soup in a hollowed bread loaf, roasted duck, bigos simmering in the back — then the walk to the Main Square for the first time, with the afternoon light hitting the Cloth Hall at exactly the right angle. Then south to Kazimierz: Father Bernatek’s Bridge over the Vistula, Ghetto Heroes Square, the maze of ul. Józefa.
Evening: coffee at Singer Café on ul. Estery — every table a vintage sewing machine, the city’s most atmospheric stop — followed by dinner at Pod Aniołami, a medieval candlelit cellar and the finest first-night meal in Kraków. Reserve ahead. Order the żurek and the duck breast.
The golden afternoon light hit the Cloth Hall at exactly the right angle. We stood in the middle of Rynek Główny and didn’t say anything for a while. There was nothing that needed saying.

Breakfast at Fable Cafe on ul. Stolarska — eight minutes from the hotel, open from eight, rated among the finest in the city. Poached eggs on artisan sourdough, specialty coffee made properly. Then the day’s centrepiece.
Lady with an Ermine — Czartoryski Museum
One of only four surviving female portraits by Leonardo da Vinci, painted around 1490. It hangs in a dedicated room on the second floor — the final hall of the tour, saved for last. She is smaller than you expect. She is more present than you are prepared for. Book at mnk.pl · 65 PLN regular / 50 PLN reduced. Allow at least two hours for the full collection: Rembrandt, Meissen porcelain, an extraordinary weapons collection.
From Czartoryski, three minutes on foot to Collegium Maius — medieval university halls, astrolabes, automated clock figurines performing on the hour. Then lunch at Szara Gęś on the Main Square — barszcz with goose croquette, dumplings with porcini and truffle — before the afternoon at Wawel Castle.
The State Rooms are the highlight: Flemish tapestries commissioned by Sigismund II Augustus, Italian-influenced Renaissance chambers, views over the Vistula from the battlements. Finish with the riverside promenade below the castle walls, bar boats moored along the bank. Dinner at Restauracja Starka in Kazimierz: house-infused vodkas, duck confit, the best table in the neighbourhood on a Saturday night. Reserve.

Sunday in Kraków comes with a gift: the National Museum’s permanent exhibitions are free. No card, no voucher, no queue — simply walk in between ten and six. Polish painting from the 19th and 20th centuries: Chełmoński’s vast nature canvases, Wyspiański’s symbolist modernism, Malczewski’s fever-dream landscapes. This saves 32 PLN per person.
Breakfast at Żarówka Cafe on ul. Floriańska — five minutes from the hotel, opening at nine, with a covered courtyard garden that stays comfortable even in rain. Then the National Museum from ten, followed by south to Podgórze and the Krakus Mound: a 15-minute climb, a legendary earth hill, a 360° panorama over the city. Almost no tourists. Always free.
Afternoon back in Kazimierz: a zapiekanka from the Okrąglak building on Plac Nowy — the open-faced baguette that has fed this district for decades, 20 PLN — then the afternoon wandering Szeroka Street, the synagogues, the bookshop inside one of them, the small galleries on ul. Józefa. Let the neighbourhood happen. Dinner at Pierogi MR Vincent: ruskie, z mięsem, ze szpinakiem. The finest pierogi in the city. Full stop.
Day 4 — Monday 15 June · Departure · Planty Park to Airport

The last morning has its own quality. Breakfast at Nowa Prowincja on ul. Bracka — open from eight, armchairs and dark wood, the legendary thick hot chocolate made from melted chocolate rather than powder. Homemade szarlotka. The ideal last hour in any city.
Check-out from Amber Design at 09:30. Then the walk to Kraków Główny through Planty Park — the ring of green that circles the old city on the line of the demolished medieval walls. Gentle, ten minutes, the best possible farewell. The 10:17 SKA1 reaches the airport at 10:35, ahead of the W6 4454 check-in closure. The airport is the final stop on the line. Departure 13:00.

Central without being theatrical about it. The hotel sits inside the Old Town ring, within walking distance of every neighbourhood that matters. Rooms are well-designed and calm, the kind of place that understands you’ll be out all day and need somewhere genuinely restful to return to. Ideal for couples visiting for culture and food rather than nightlife.

Getting There & Around
Flights — Sofia to Kraków
Wizz Air operates the Sofia (SOF) → Kraków Balice (KRK) route directly. W6 4453 departs Friday morning and lands at 12:25. W6 4454 departs Monday at 13:00. Journey time: approximately 2 hours 20 minutes. Book well in advance for best fares on this route.
Airport to City — SKA1 Train
From the terminal, follow the covered walkway upstairs to the SKA1 train platform. The ticket machine is to the left of the currency exchange in Arrivals Hall — card accepted, no cash needed. Cost: 19–20 PLN (~€4.50) per person. Journey: 17 minutes to Kraków Główny main station. Trains run every 30 minutes from 06:47 to 22:17. The airport is the final stop — impossible to miss.
Getting Around the City
The Old Town, Kazimierz, and Wawel are all walkable from each other. The entire route of this four-day itinerary requires no taxis, no car hire, and no metro. Kraków is a walking city: compact, flat, and designed for it. The Podgórze mound requires a 15-minute walk south from Kazimierz.
City to Airport — Departure
The 10:17 SKA1 from Kraków Główny arrives at the airport at 10:35 — well ahead of the W6 4454 check-in closure at 10:30. Walk from the hotel through Planty Park to Główny station in 10–12 minutes. The airport is the final stop on the line. Alternative: 09:47 for an extra half-hour of comfort at the airport.
Souvenirs Worth Keeping
Kraków has souvenirs that embarrass themselves and souvenirs that are the correct thing to bring home. Here is the latter list — curated, specific, and with exactly where to get each one.
- Amber Jewellery — Sukiennice (Cloth Hall), Rynek Główny. Genuine Baltic amber only — ask for a certificate of authenticity. Warm to the touch, with natural inclusions. Not resin.
- Obwarzanek Krakowski — Any street cart on the Main Square, 2 PLN. The Kraków bread ring. This is not a souvenir to take home — eat it immediately, still warm, while walking. It doesn’t travel. That’s the point.
- Oscypek Cheese — Stary Kleparz market, ul. Bashtova. Smoked sheep’s cheese from the Tatra mountains, protected designation of origin. Buy at the market, not at the airport.
- Bolesławiec Ceramics — Sukiennice or shops on ul. Grodzka. Hand-painted blue-and-white Polish pottery. Beautiful and genuinely practical — the opposite of a novelty souvenir.
- Żubrówka Bison Grass Vodka — Any Żabka or supermarket, ~35 PLN. The blade of bison grass in the bottle is the tell. This is the authentic Polish product — not the export version. Made differently. Tastes better.
- Pączki (Polish Doughnuts) — Any local patisserie. Rose-glazed, filled with rose hip jam. Eat the same day. This is a morning decision, not a souvenir.
- Czartoryski Museum Print — The museum gift shop. Reproduction prints of the Lady with an Ermine. The most honest souvenir from the most significant hour of the trip.
Spend Less, See More
Three specific, verified tips — not generic advice.
All permanent exhibitions at the National Museum’s main building are completely free on Sundays. This saves 32 PLN per person (64 PLN for a couple). The collection — Polish painting from the 19th and 20th centuries — is one of the finest in Central Europe. Schedule your cultural morning on Sunday and spend what you save on dinner at Starka instead.
The SKA1 train from Kraków Główny to the airport takes 17 minutes and costs 19–20 PLN (~€4.50) per person. A taxi covers the same distance in the same time (in good traffic) for 80–120 PLN. Use the Jakdojade app for live timetables. Trains run every 30 minutes from 05:36. The airport is the final stop — impossible to miss.
Milkbar Tomasza and Marchewka z Groszkiem are both genuine and genuinely affordable. A full hot lunch for two — soup, main, drink — for under 60 PLN (~€14). Polish home cooking at near-cost prices, subsidised by decades of tradition. Tap water in Kraków is safe to drink and always free.

What We’d Do Differently
- Add Auschwitz-Birkenau — a 90-minute coach from Kraków, and one of the most important visits possible. A full day reserved, not squeezed in. Book early; daily timed slots fill weeks ahead.
- Visit on a Tuesday — the Czartoryski Museum, Rynek Underground, and the Cloth Hall Gallery are all free on Tuesdays. A full day of culture for almost nothing.
- Add one more night — Saalbach, Schindler’s Factory, and the Wieliczka Salt Mine all deserve their own days. Four nights would allow for one longer regional excursion.
- Book Wawel earlier — State Room timed slots sell out on summer weekends. Book at wawel.krakow.pl at least two weeks in advance, not the day before.
- Try Hamsa for lunch in Kazimierz — ul. Szeroka 2, Israeli-Polish cuisine and exceptional hummus. We ran out of time. High on the list for next visit.
Pack List — June Edition
- Light rain jacket — June in Kraków has a 70–80% chance of showers. The city is beautiful in the rain; being prepared makes it more so.
- Comfortable walking shoes — cobblestones everywhere, all day. Not trainers. Something with ankle support.
- One smart outfit — for dinner at Pod Aniołami or Starka. The restaurants are not formal, but they reward the effort.
- Power bank — maps, tickets, timetables: your phone does everything.
- Cash in PLN — most places accept card, but the Okrąglak zapiekanka stall on Plac Nowy is cash-only. Have 50–100 PLN available.
- Reusable tote bag — for the Stary Kleparz market and the Sukiennice amber shops. Plastic bags are charged at most stores.
