Some places recharge you with energy the moment you arrive, and the area around Petrich and Melnik is definitely one of them. We just returned from three unforgettable days in Southwest Bulgaria, and we couldn’t wait to share the vibes of this trip!

Rupite and Heraclea Sintica: Walking in the Footsteps of History

Our journey started with a powerful spark in Rupite—that mystical place, the home of the famous Baba Vanga, where nature and spirituality intertwine uniquely. Immediately after, we immersed ourselves in the history of the ancient city of Heraclea Sintica. Walking through the ruins felt like a true journey through time, reminding us how many ancient civilizations once graced our lands.

In the afternoon, we shifted gears to a different dimension—the one of the senses. We stopped by Kapatovo winery in the village of Zornitsa and were instantly captivated. The combination of fairytale panoramic views and exquisite wine tasting is exactly what one needs to unwind. The region is so rich in exceptional wineries that we have already officially added a “winery hopping tour” to our future travel plans!

Melnik: Where Time Stands Still

Melnik always has a surprise up its sleeve. The strolls along the cobblestone streets and the light hiking above the town gave us a great energy boost. We highly recommend the Kordopulova House—the largest Bulgarian National Revival-era house in the Balkans and an absolute architectural masterpiece. We also visited the sacred Rozhen Monastery; despite some minor adventures along the way, the spirit of the place remains truly unique.

Final Touches

Despite some minor logistical surprises with our accommodation, “Villa Sintica” sent us off with smiles and the official opening of the sunbathing season at their pool. We returned home with a wonderful feeling and a lot of inspiration. The Southwest is full of life, sun, and flavor, and if you are looking for the perfect spot for a short, amazing getaway, this is your destination!
