This one moved us through three completely different registers — a hushed concert hall, a mountain meadow shaking with bagpipes, and a spa pool with a view of Snezhanka peak — and never once felt rushed. If you’re short on days but long on curiosity, this is the recipe: minimal driving, maximum contrast.
The timing wasn’t an accident. The last weekend of July lines up Plovdiv’s jazz calendar with the Rhodopes’ biggest folklore gathering of the year, and Pamporovo sits close enough to both that Sunday can simply be about doing nothing at all.
Three Zones, One Weekend
The old town’s open-air stages and small venues carry Bulgaria’s summer jazz season. An easy first night, walkable from where you sleep.

Day 1 Friday — Jazz in Plovdiv
We opened the weekend gently, with a two-hour set from the Jan Garbarek Group with Trilok Gurtu — the kind of concert that makes a room forget it’s summer outside. Garbarek’s saxophone against Gurtu’s percussion is a masterclass in restraint; nothing is rushed, and every silence is deliberate.
For the night, we booked Sunflowers Apartment through Airbnb — a straightforward, comfortable base a short walk from the old town, which meant no taxi juggling after a late finish.

Day 2 Saturday — 101 Kaba Gaidi in Gela
A short, easy drive from Plovdiv brought us into the Rhodopes and up to Gela, a village that spends fifty-one weeks a year in quiet and one weekend hosting thousands. We’d landed on the Saturday of the National Bagpipe Competition and Family Gathering — the festival’s main day, held on the Ilinden Meadows above the village.
Veli even joined in among the amateur players before the competition proper began. The day builds slowly — solo players, family ensembles, a market of local crafts and food — before the finale we’d come for: over a hundred kaba gaidi, the deep Rhodope bagpipes, playing together as one orchestra. It’s less a performance than a physical sensation; the sound moves through the meadow and through you at the same time. Descriptions fall short of what a hundred bagpipes sound like in the open air — it’s a piece of Rhodope identity you feel more than watch.

Day 3 Sunday — Peak Relaxation in Pamporovo
Sunday had exactly one job: unwind. We drove the short distance to Pamporovo and checked into Hotel Perelik, whose Body & Soul SPA Lounge — a semi-Olympic pool plus saunas, hammam, and an ice room — was the perfect antidote to two days of standing in fields and concert halls.
We’d booked the hotel’s best room, on the 8th floor, and the view alone was worth the stop: Snezhanka peak, the ski slopes threading down the mountain, and the TV tower in the distance — a proper Rhodope panorama to close the weekend on.

The Revival-era village just below Gela is worth a slow half-hour if you have room in the schedule — stone-roofed houses and a quiet main street.
Skip the main pedestrian strip after the concert and duck into Kapana’s side streets for a nightcap among locals.
If the spa isn’t enough movement, the hotel’s new outdoor adventure park is a short walk from Hotel Perelik.

What We’d Do Differently
We’d give Gela a little more time before the finale — arriving even earlier to catch the solo and family rounds properly, rather than treating the day as a build-up to the closing orchestra alone. A short stop in Shiroka Laka on the way up would have rounded out the mountain day nicely, too.
